| This house was constructed as the centre of a farm, following Palladio's principle that a great house is like a little city. The walls are made of stone cobbles from the Yorkshire Dales picked up from the fields around the site. The mouldings and proportions are the result of several visits to the Veneto. Although the influence of Palladio is clear, this has been combined with the characteristic attenuation of John Carr of York. The house is flanked by wings and an outer courtyard with symmetrical timber farm buildings and stables. |
